I don't think most of the soft in cooker was beta. It is just a way
to give users
the try to soft not included in a main distribution, without making a
new distro
only to update X. But now I don't see any problem for the next
Mandrake shipping
with X401 as default.
About the qualifier "snapshot", I think it was a mistake from Mandrake people,
because all the 3.99.xx releases of X were snapshots previous to the
final release,
and the 4.0 was no more called a snapshot...
