I just did this the other day for my router.  The problem is simply one of
finding the right pinouts and getting/making a cable which mates the tx/rx lines
properly.  Hers's a site which will help:

In my case, the router pinout was totally proprietary, though somewhat
"standards-based" in that on an RJ45, leads 2&3 were tx/rx...  :^)  You will of
course need to find & connect the ground pins.  In some cases, the DTR, DSR/CXR,
RTS+CTS leads may also be needed, though usually not for "dumb" devices.

Then, use minicom...  setup the baud rate, etc. remove all the modem strings,
turn off any lead monitoring and save the config (ie, as "ctronhub").  Then,
just startup using "minicom ctronhub" when you need it...
