hmmm....
check /var/lock and see whats there
scan your home and var directories for a file *.lck or *.LCK
See if theres anythign there that looks suspect
thats about all I can think of apart from blowing away all your .x files
in teh home directory and rebuilding them from the skeletons (pretty
drastic)
