I don't use kdm, so I didn't notice this myself, but I can reproduce
the problem on my machine.
How to fix kdm I don't know. But to get the system running you could
boot into run level 3 instead of 5, and then start X and KDE manually.
If you use GRUB, you can 'e'dit your boot command at the initial boot
screen. Just add a '3' to the line, and boot it. This should get you
into run level 3 (no X). Alternatively, you can type 'init 3' in a
terminal window when you have the system up.
Then put the line 'startkde' in your $HOME/.xinitrc file (comment out
whatever is there before about other window managers).
Then type 'startx' at the prompt, and you should be fine.
