check to make sure there is nothing bogus in your /etc/hosts file... you may
wich to remove everything except: 127.0.0.1 localhost
localhost.localdomain.
Other than that, I'm not familiar with proftpd, and don't know what it
requires at startup. It may be possible that you are starting the service
before an IP address has been assigned to your external IF.
By the looks of the host name you included, you're either on cable or DSL.
Assigned an IP address by DHCP.
In this case you may need to use a script to grep the ip address from
/sbin/ifconfig, and maybe store it in /etc/hosts, before the proftd service
starts.
