why are you using the machine as root? you should be doing everything as a

have you installed the "developer" version of mandrake (it asks you during
install).. if not, then you won't be able to compile anything.. if yes,
then a package is probably missing.. fire up kpackage or rpmdrake and find
this file... and u'll know instantly what RPM you need to installed, or if
its already there, then where it is.

you _never_ have to re-install a linux machine.. its something that came
from the windoze world... there is always a way to solve the problem.

btw, get the gphoto rpm from mandrake's site rather than any other site..
go to rpmfind.net.. go to Mandrake.. check if its there in the 7.1 RPMS (if
its there, means its also there on u're CD).. neway, if u want the latest,
go to Cooker (under Mandrake on rpmfind.net) and I'am sure they'll have the
latest working, stable version of gphoto out there.. pick it and install
it.

my general sugggestion to all.. allways search for RPMs on Mandrake's
cooker first.. if its not there, only then download it from other sources.
