Even though I set the PCM level with alsamixer, when I ran gmixer, it was set at '0'. Raising the level there got me sound. Thanks for the explicit directions. One further problem, though: [root@starbaby marler]# alsactl restore alsactl: Cannot open configuration file '/etc/asound.conf'.. Obviously, that file does not exist.
