OK, this appears to be a chicken and egg problem on
the compile end.

I try and try to compile the XFree86-4.0.1-21mdk.src.rpm.
It gets nearly completely done only to produce bupkis, nada,
nuthin'. Instead, I get a message about it not finding
glide_drv.o...after a LONG compile process. First off, why
wouldn't it KNOW that this is missing well before starting
compilation? That is what configure is for, is it not,
to check your system to see if it meets requirements? Why
isn't this listed as a dependency for the rpm? If it is
supposed to be supplied with XFree, then why isn't it in
the XFree source directories?

This brings me next to Mesa-3.3. I keep trying to compile
this src.rpm only for it to die after a long compile period
with a message, in config.log, about not finding GL/glut.h.
Isn't glut.h supposed to be supplied by Mesa? That's just
about the whole point of Mesa, to supply OpenGL-like function
to unix/linux, yet it appears to NOT supply a critical part of
that function/lib? Mesa does supply glut.h doesn't it? If
it does, why can't if find it in its own directories...it is
the sourcecode for Mesa?

What am I missing here? XFree86-4.x appears absolutely dependent
upon one measly driver, glide_drv.o, and it isn't listed among
the dependencies and isn't detected (as existing or missing during
configure), and is only detected at the VERY end of the build
process. Mesa is supposed to supply such things as libGL, libGLU,
glut.h, yet it can't find what it is supposed to supply in its
own sourcecode? There isn't a dependency missing here that Mesa
doesn't know about is there? Some OUTSIDE source of glut.h?

Please help me clear up the confusion this is causing me. I have
just spend days fixing this and that, upgrading this and that, on
my system to the point that it appeared all my rpm --rebuild
problems were solved. I have been building many src.rpms without
difficulty lately and decided to give another go to XFree and Mesa,
but they are STILL giving me a headache with their repetitive
problems that ONLY appear at the ass-end of a long build process.

Thank you,

praedor
