I finally managed to get XFree86 to compile and actually produce
rpms. I had to jump through some indefensible hoops to do it,
however.

After seeing the glide_drv.o error that was a showstopper
as far as building XFree was concerned, I did a websearch
for glide_drv.o and found a site that had that particular
file available for download. I downloaded it and not knowing
where it should go, I placed it in my kernel modules/video
directory and made a symlink from it to /usr/X11R6/lib/modules.

Upon trying to build XFree86 yet again, it actually completed
and made rpms, which I installed and am using now.

There is NO mention anywhere that there is an (absolute)
dependency upon glide_drv.o for successful XFree86 building.
The configure script doesn't look for it prior to compilation.
It is only found missing AFTER compilation is essentially
complete and the rpm binary build process is supposed to take
place. You get to the "..rpm-provides" and "...rpm-requires"
portion of the build process at which point rpms are normally
written. You just don't get anything at all to show for the
long time spent compiling.

I had already compiled and installed X11R6-contrib. I had
built XFree86-compat-3.3.6. No dependency problems were
brought up at the beginning of the build process. Going out
to the net and finding that one file fixed the problem.

As for Mesa, I am still fighting with it.
