Best option for old laptops is to take the drive out, put it in another
machine (you get 2.5 to 3.5 inch adapters) and install there. At the end
of installation, put the drive back in the original machine. Make sure
you don't get X to start automotically.

Did this on an old Compaq, which also has a PCMCIA NIC linux doesn't
have drivers for.
