I have looked at xinitrc, Nope, those are the standard places for alone installs of X and so on. Mandrake does not start directly gdm or xdm (look at your /etc/inittab, at the end, the line for runlevel 5). It starts a script called /etc/X11/prefdm, that time ago was a symlink to your PREFerred Display Manager, but now it is a script that looks for your preferred gui in a file called /etc/sysconfig/desktop. So type "echo GNOME > /etc/sysconfig/desktop" and your done, dont have to edit inittab's and so on... (Warning: take care about case typos, I suffered from one when Makdrake changed /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions/GNOME forth and back to Gnome in some cooker releases for gdm...) Hope this helps you.
