Try "xinit" from the CLI (command-line Interface). This should bring up, simply, X and an XTerm. Type "gnome-session" into the XTerm, and watch GNOME load. Hope this helps. -- Asheesh. (make sure you're in runlevel 3; "init 3" will do that for you, of course)
