If you had problems due to upgrading to 2.96, it should. This is merely
to point out that Mandrake is not shipping 2.96 with LM 7.2 (since the
packages are frozen, only bugfixes)

Version. Basically every time a package is compiled and packaged again.

When I compile a kernel , I copy it to /boot, and name it
vmlinuz<kernel_version>_bgmx
where bgm indicates who compiled it (me) and the x indicates which one
is was (I took 5 compiles to get exactly the kernel I wanted the first
time). This is a similar approach to what you should do with packages.
