After installing 7.2 I decided to retrieve my data from my bzip
file....only problem was that I always got an error regarding data
corruption from bzip.

Thinking this was rather odd I tried even changing the kernel back to
what I used with 7.1 thinking something odd must be with 7.2....This
didn't fix a thing!

Getting desparate I reinstalled 7.1 and attempted to unbzip my
file.....you guessed it worked FIRST time...and the second and the
third!

Reinstall Mandrake 7.2 and guess what....fails everytime!! next I start
thinking well I installed with optimisation on maybe thats screwing
things.....re-install without optimisation and guess what? Its still
broken.....try a few other things then decide to re-install with
reformatting with -c for bad blocks....at the end I still can't unbzip
anything large...which roughly equates to anything over about 30 meg.

Interesting part is tar and gzip work fine.....trying another data
compressor that uses large amounts of cpu time (rar) yeilds the same
results as bzip.

Now thinking back to 7.1 hd optimisation was achieved by adding opti in
lilo.....lilo in 7.2 has the added line "idex=autotune" but there is
nowhere in any of the startup scripts that use this.....maybe its used
somewhere else but I haven't had the time to investigate....any way
cutting it short I rewrote /etc/rc.d/init.d/mandrake_everytime to
include using hdparm as per what was in 7.1 and guess what....

YES BZIP RAR etc all now work.....I have no idea what is up with
mandrake but thought I'd post this in case someone else is having
problems and since I just wasted an entire 12 hrs installing re
installing etc I thought I'd save someone else some time!
