Did you test your hard drive performance with hdparm -Tt /dev/sda ? I personnally get /dev/hda: Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 0.88 seconds =145.45 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 2.69 seconds = 23.79 MB/sec And you should have higher performance results, I suppose.
