The various ftp applications have nothing to do with using rsync,
wget, or fmirror - they are all much better alternatives to ftp
(which only does one file at a time) and all can download recursively
whole subtrees of directories, whole ftp archives or whole web sites
if you really want to do that <g>.

You plainly need to read:

man rsync
man wget
man fmirror.

rsync is the most flexible and so has the steepest learning curve and
so gives the greatest return on effort.
