I just installed LM 7.2 with KDE 2 on my server, using XFree 4.01. It's running a single Pentium III with a Serverworks chipset. The kernel was compile for SMP. Like you, it randomly hangs if I do some graphical manipulation. Switched to XFree 3.3.6, with a uniprocessor kernel, and haven't had a single problem since.
