I have experienced similar problems with pppd using two different distros, Turbolinux (ver 3.6 & 6.0) and Mandrake (ver 7.1) and two different isp's (attglobal.net -formerly ibm.net & batelnet.bs - surely the least sophisticated isp on the planet). The former isp requires a special logon script using /etc/ppp/options and /etc/ppp/pap-secrets whereas the latter isp works with the simple script in gnome. In all cases I can connect to the internet, via Netscape 4.73, only when logged on as root (su does not work). The instant appearance of the message that ppp daemon died unexpectedly is apparently a notice that connect failed. Changing mode in ppp does not help - on my system at least. Modifying /etc/ppp/options does not help to log on as non-root because access to the file is available only to root - message "access denied". Because the problem of logging on to the internet as non-root is not confined for me to one distro or one isp and the fact that nobody ever answers my queries, leads me to suspect that the problem is Linux problem. How many people are connecting as root and are ashamed to admit it? barton Anton Graham wrote: > Submitted 10-Nov-00 by Ivan: > > Hello. > > Hiya :) > > > How do I turn off this desire to have > > the host authenticate its self? > > Add noauth to the ppp options > > > And if you don't mind another question, what is a good mail client similar to > > kmail, that will work with out making our magically inclined friends mad? > > I've heard good things about balsa. > > -- > Anton Graham GPG ID: 0x18F78541 > <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> RSA key available upon request > > Don't try to outweird me, three-eyes.
