Hi: I ran into this problem to day in Mandrake 7.2 (in both KDE2 and Gnome). I installed a program and wanted to create an application icon on the desktop. The application runs fine (from the console or the run command). However, the same command that gets it going just fine from the console doesn't work with either the KDE application (e.g., MyProgram.kdelnk) or with the Gnome Launcher. Both just thrash the hard disk for a few tantilizing seconds and then go silent (with no program launch). The funny thing was, I used to do this all the time in KDE 1.2.x and it worked just fine. I checked the Mandrake User's Manual and the instructions were identical to the older version. Now here is the twist... If I modify my $PATH statement to include the directory with my new program, the application launcher (KDE icon) works just fine. I don't like the idea of modifying .bash_profile every time I install a new program. Has anyone else run into this problem, or know of a workaround? Thanks.
