Mandrake development has moved on to glibc 2.2 and gcc 2.96, and as such anything being currently packaged specifically for Mandrake will require glibc 2.2. The solution for me has been to download .src.rpms and rpm --rebuild them on my box. While this does entail compiling, it will also keep your box all RPM as you stated was your desire. glibc 2.2 is available on the Cooker mirrors, but it is in a state of flux atm, and I wouldn't suggest upgrading it for at least a week.
