Some interesting numbers to compare with your maxtor. The following is
using UDMA-33 with near minimal optimization in Mandrake 7.2:

 Model=IBM-DPTA-372050:
/dev/hda:
 multcount    = 16 (on)
 I/O support  =  0 (default 16-bit)
 unmaskirq    =  0 (off)
 using_dma    =  1 (on)
 keepsettings =  0 (off)
 nowerr       =  0 (off)
 readonly     =  0 (off)
 readahead    =  8 (on)
 geometry     = 2495/255/63, sectors = 40088160, start =
0

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffer-cache reads:   128 MB in  1.08 seconds =118.52 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 2.95 seconds = 21.69
MB/sec

Model=IBM-DJNA-371350:
/dev/hdb:
 multcount    = 16 (on)
 I/O support  =  0 (default 16-bit)
 unmaskirq    =  0 (off)
 using_dma    =  1 (on)
 keepsettings =  0 (off)
 nowerr       =  0 (off)
 readonly     =  0 (off)
 readahead    =  8 (on)

/dev/hdb:
 Timing buffer-cache reads:   128 MB in  1.07 seconds =119.63 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 3.98 seconds = 16.08
MB/sec
