You mention only the opening and closing sounds work - the sounds activated on install of kde2.0. Have you gone into the control panel > LookNFeel > System Notifications > The KDE Window Manager and selected play sound and assigned a sound file to each event? As as far as them sounding terrible I haven't a clue - They are just fine on my system.
