Hello all:

here's my comment as I'm having severe problems with the ftp Daemon on 7.2 (adding up
to
Lee Bullers posting and related replies):

 Look into xinetd......

That's what I have come up with; Mandrake 7.2 installed 2 ftpd packages -
wu-ftpd-2.6.1-7.mdk and proftpd-1.2.0rc2-7.mdk.

Ftpd is called through xinetd configuration file /etc/xinet.d/wu-ftpd with
server = /usr/sbin/in.ftpd
                                            ^^^^this actually links to
/usr/sbin/proftpd
server_args= -l -a

If you check the man pages for ftpd
-l enables logging and
-a requires authentication

but for proftpd
-l lists all compiled-in modules and
-a does not exist

editing the configuration file didn't help, so I erased both ftpd packages and
re-installed
only the wu-ftpd server (and of xourse the anonftp package). Still, I don't get very
far -
the server is answering but this is what it sends to me:

***
ftp> open 192.168.0.1
Connected to 192.168.0.1.
500 mrt.mheyl.com FTP server shut down -- please try again later.
***

This is on my home lan with a Class C Network and regardless if the other hosts
are included in the /etc/hosts file or not, I get this stupid non working ftp server!

Does anyone have an idea - it would be greatly appreciated as I'm running out of
ideas. BTW I'm running on a medium/low security level so hosts.allow/.deny are
empty.

Markus
