Yes, I repartitioned and formatted my drives. I am noticing that the slow
response appears to be kde-specific. If I open a konsole and try to start
any kde app, it is slooooooow to start (I counted 20 seconds to open a
konsole itself). If I start any non-kde app (like nmapfe, xterm, gftp, etc)
it is fast - almost immediate. The problem is kde-specific.

I downloaded qt2-2.2.1 src and rebuilt it and installed the new build. No
effect. I tried building the kdebase src rpm but, as usual on a Mandrake
system, it refuses to build (I ALWAYS have problems with kde src on mandrake
systems, even though all dependencies are met).

Here I made a mistake...during the install of 7.2, I did my usual expert mode
install and selected all the packages I wanted installed. I decided to
forego installing Gnome. What a dumb mistake THAT was. I should have dumped
kde instead - I would have a fast, responsive system rather than this fast
Athlon system masquerading as a 286.
