Hello Jerry,
JS> I sent this a couple of days ago and it seems it never made it to the list.
JS> I will be getting an intel 815e motherboard with onboard sound and 4Xagp
JS> graphics. I was wondering 2 things has anyone installed Mandrake 7.2 on
JS> one of these, if so what "challenges" if any can I look forward to if any to
JS> get the hardware recognized. I plan on doing a fresh install. According to
JS> the intel FAQ I can anticipate it not seeing all of my memory for 2.x series
JS> of kernels, it also looks like I will have to install a graphic driver from
JS> intel for the agp support.
JS> Also, since I currently use a Creatave TNT2 Ultra in 24bit will I be
JS> disappointed by video performance, including openGL? The xfree86.org site
JS> indicates 4.02 has improved DRI but only at 16. It does have a slot for
JS> adding an agp video card if I choose, but I am wondering if this is worth the
JS> added expense to play some games.
JS> If anybody has some experience with these I would appreciate their feedback,
JS> since I won't tackle this until the weekend I am trying to plan ahead.
JS> Thanks
JS> Jerry
Basically and simply, this is the BEST you can buy now, this board is
awesome great wonderful blah blah :) (am in electronics, and pc's for
so long) and am saying it after trying really many different stuff,
many many...
Harddisk speed is great ( IDE controlling stuff I assume, is really
good, working on my ata 66 quantum and ata 33 IBM and ata 100 maxtor)
Soundcard is good enough for an onboard card, es1373, and works in
linux:)
Everything seems so good.
I installed, with many different hardware configurations, on this
board, so many distrubitions, and all mandrake above 6.1, many many
times.
I did not came across any sort of memory problem, I tried kernels from
2.13 to 2.4 tests. Tried different combinations.
As far as I remember, that agp support thingy and the drivers at the
intels site, were the files of 810, old stuff, and a source rpm as far
as I remember. Honestiy, they did not do anything useful, and with
XFree 4.0.1 I was getting good graphics with no addition from intel:)
I might have not used agp support, but it did not change much as far
as I remember. If you want it, and if am not wrong, you make it from a
source rpm, and it did not cause me trouble on my Mandrake 7.2 while
installing.
I also have creative tnt2 ultra, with 32 MB ram. So here comes the
only trouble I exzperienced. With mandrake 7.1 and earlier, (and many
distributions), the ones with kernel below 2.2.16 , I had great
performance using nvidia's own drivers, on 2D and 3D. (very great
openGL) But with mandrake 7.2, only and only because of the kernel, I
had trouble installing the nvidia's drivers on my linux box, even
though I tried so much. If you use the xfree 4.0.1 drivers, tnt2 works
great, in 2D, but I cant say much good for 3D.
The trouble is something about the agpgart in kernel, which can not
manage the agp stuff. It is something, I assume, that is about to be
fixed or "patched" soon, just needs some attention, guess.
I dont know about the ethernet on it, as you are getting the one with
the ethernet on, I guess, but what I know the ethernet onboard is
good, and I guess linux will recognize it easily.
