Hi Robert,

This isn't going to fix your problem, but just note that using the
ideX=0x?????,0x????? append lines results in you using the ide
controller in legacy mode. You might want to try ideX=dma instead at
some stage and compare the resluts you get from 
# hdparm -tT /dev/hde

Also, you might want to try grub for booting linux. I use grub to
triple-boot (Win9x,Win2k,LM 7.2).
