I can confirm that Linus himself has said people should not be
compiling their kernel from /usr/src/linux, but rather they/we should
do the compile in our own home directory. However, I myself have only
done my recompiles in /usr/src (I read about the Linus statement after
my last kernel recompile).
Does the error tell you which directory or file is being looked for and
not found? Also, can you confirm that the directory or file in question
does, in fact, exist on your system? Finally, are you compiling as root
or as a user, and have you tried doing it the other way around (as a
user instead of root, or vise versa)?
