Check your /dev/modem softlink and make sure it points to /dev/ttyS1

I.E.

ls -l /dev/modem

If so run minicom and with minicom up type

ATZ

you should get back an OK.

If not type in

ATZ

then

AT&F

and

AT&F1

and

AT&W

and then

ATZ

again.

At some point you should start getting "OK"'s again...

Remember that you might NOT see what you type in until the modem is fully
"reset".

It could be that your modem is not communicating due to software settings or
defaults. USR's are notorious for this.

The above commands resets the modem NVRAM to optimal settings and saves the
defaults...
