Ok, I'll chime in on this one. Internet connections sharing using a Win9x machine as
a gateway to
serve an internet connection to your linux box isn't that difficult at all. I did it
by accident and
it took me several hours to get rid of it. Here is how I accidentally did it.
First, I had a 4 computer peer-to-peer lan of Win9x and WinME boxes. One of the Win98
boxes provided
internet connection sharing to the others. I built a linux box to finally act as a
real file server,
etc.. I loaded Mandrake 7.2 custom/server install. I fired the linux box up cranked up
Netscape to
read some HOW-TOs and bingo, I had the live Netscape homepage staring me in my face.
(I also heard the
modem on the Win98 box dial out)
Snooping around, I found Mandrake had set the gateway IP address to the IP address of
the Win98 box
that was providing internet connection sharing. Everything worked great except I
don't think the
Win98 box would disconnect the dial-up connection when idle anymore.
Long and short of it is, if your want to serve an internet connection from your
Windows box to you
Linux box, just set up internet connection sharing on your windows box and tell you
Linux box that the
gateway IP is the IP for the windows box offering the connection.
No guarantees that this will work exactly as explained. Remember, I didn't do this on
purpose. I
simply plugged my Linux box into my lan and to my great suprise was able to surf
through on of my
Win98 boxes - go figure?
