"Post" has many definitions, both as verb and noun. One of them is to
consign to the postal service (letter carrier), a verb. An item so
consigned is a noun. On the net, the carrier is different, but the
process is the same, so once you have pressed your "send" button, you
have posted your "post".
Also, on a mailing list, an original message is anything but private.
The effect of posting to a mailing list has an effect functionally
equivalent to posting a message on a public bulletin board.
