I had similar problems after installing Ximain, one of the last things
the Ximian installer mentioned was the need to configure gdm. Since I
sort of understood the contortions that Mandrake goes thru with kdm, I
decided to get that working again, rather than attempting to figure out
how gdm needed to be configured.
1 - add the following to a file named /etc/X11/wmsession.d/02Gnome This
will get Gnome back into the kdm menu (I use kdm rather than gdm). This
was there with the mandrake install of Gnome, but needed to be tweaked a
bit since Ximian has a different executable for starting Gnome. The file
should not be present after the Ximian install.
NAME=Gnome
ICON=gnome-logo-icon-transparent.xpm
DESC=Gnome Environment
EXEC=/usr/bin/gnome-session
SCRIPT:
exec /usr/bin/gnome-session
2 - Edit /etc/sysconfig/desktop and replace the GNOME with KDE, this will
bring back kdm instead of the ugly gdm that came with Ximian, This will
also make KDE the default desktop again. An alternative would be to muck
about with /etc/X11/prefdm
3 - Restart X
