Hi folks,
Well, I just joined the list and just switched over from Redhat 7 to
Mandrake 7.2.
I will admit that I liked the install better and Mandrake seems to be a
little better organized then current RH releases. I especially love it
that it's KDE2 is more stable and works better then redhat's setup. So
far nothing has crashed. I do like the usernet (symbolic link from rp3
pppd program) that lets me monitor my network through/out put that is in
redhat, so I installed that program (no deps of course) and it runs here
now so that will keep me on this one longer.
It is basically almost the same setup as redhat as far as the filesystem
but I liked it that it gave lots of options of which filesystem to
choose from during partitioning, in which Reiserfs was used except for
/boot which I made as normal.
I prefer sendmail over postfix, maybe cause I'm used to it, so had to
uninstall that and install sendmail but got that working without a
hitch.
I do have a question though...I noticed I saw /usr/src/linux-2.4.0 got
installed. I ran 2.4.1 in RH 7 and was thinking of upgrading to that on
this 7.2 as well. Can I just compile the kernel like I did in RH or is
7.2 not prepared to run the newer kernel and I need more
packages/headers/etc..?
All in all, maybe I'll stay on this distro awhile and see how I like it
as I learn on it more. Oh, only other thing I see so far, is it seems
when I check my email (via pop3 from my winders computer that is
networked to it) it seems to hang for a few extra seconds. RH didn't do
that for me, for the most part so was wondering if that is something I
can fix/do.
Anyway, I'm living in Chicago, IL and have been using linux for a couple
years now, mainly little over a year of it with linux installed on a
computer at home. Rest of it working with shell accounts and at work
with Solaris. I'm not an expert but I don't think I'm a newbie either
so I joined both list just in case hehe.
So just wanted to say hello to the list and introduce myself so, Hiyas
heh.
Thanks for having me (even though ya didn't ask for me hehe)
