Tack! Jesper,

You're kind to reply. FYI, the current pcmcia package includes pre-compiled
driver binaries for most popular wireless devices, including Orinoco, using
the GPL version of the driver (rather than Lucent's), maintained by Anton
Blanchard. This is arguably preferable, as it is open source and supports
the wireless extensions.

Current behaviour:
------------------

Upon inserting the card, a high and low beep is sounded. LED closer the
centre is lit green, LED closer the edge is dark.

Logged messages from cardmgr:
-----------------------------

[inserting the Orinoco card]
badtz cardmgr[222]: shutting down socket 0
badtz cardmgr[222]: executing: './network stop eth0'
badtz cardmgr[222]: executing: 'modprobe -r 3c574_cs'
badtz cardmgr[222]: + Note: /etc/modules.conf is more recent than
/lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/modules.dep
badtz cardmgr[222]: initializing socket 0

badtz cardmgr[222]: executing: './network start wvlan0'
badtz cardmgr[222]: + usage: ifup <device name>
badtz cardmgr[222]: start cmd exited with status 1

What I've left done:
--------------------

1. I've left my /etc/modules.conf to include the line:
    alias wvlan0 wvlan_cs
2. I've left my /etc/pcmcia/config.opts to inlcude the line:
    module "wvlan_cs" opts "station_name=MY_PC"

What I'm confused about:
------------------------

1. cardmgr seems to be doing nice neat modprobes -- is it necessary to have
a line for wvlan_cs in my modules.conf ?

2. Are the default args and values in config.opts adequate or even
desirable?

3. The man page for wvlan_cs suggests to issue #insmod wvlan_cs.o ... but
I'm confused about the values for irq_list= (and anyways insmod complains to
me that there is no wvlan_cs.o...)

4. I don't completely understand the logged messages: what is the line:
    + usage: ifup <device name> telling me?

5. Am I just completely thick? Am I missing something simple?

Sorry for the clueless questions.
