Making a little progress now.  I verified that chksession was building the 
correct line in the kdm configuration file, but I found a simple error in the 
gdm menu scripts file Xfce instead of xfce in one place and xfce instead of 
Xfce in another.  Now Xfce appears in the login menu, and it starts in a 
mixed mode.  The cursor remains KDE style.  I can start kmail and click on 
things, but if I try to drag the kmail window by clicking in the title area 
nothing happens.  Needless to say, this doesn't happen if I start xfce from a 
console in runlevel 3.

Any clues about this behavior?
