Take a look at the file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and see if there's
anything that
doesn't look right.
Try to bring it up:
# ifup eth0 #this won't work if the above file is not set up properly.
# ifconfig #this is to see what's "up"
Is your eth0 up? If it is, and it has the ip address and netmask that you want, then
you can try
some pinging tests for connectivity:
# ping <your.ip.address.here>
# ping <your.other.computer's.address>
If you can ping either from your box to Windows box or the other way around, then you
have
connectivity. Getting them to "talk" to one-another might involve Samba, depending on
what you
want them to talk about.
Be sure to check the man page for ifconfig.
As for your ppp device, i haven't used one in a while so i'm not sure. There should be
an
ifcfg-ppp0 file in the same place as the ifcfg-eth0 file.
I hate to say it but in the past i've fiddled and fiddled and for some funny reason
rebooting
sometimes seemed to help. I've also had instances where i've had to type
# ifconfig eth0 -netmask 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.1
twice in order to get it to work (the first time produced an error message, the second
time
worked). I dunno.....
Hope that helps a bit,
