1. Both WIN98 and Linux Mandrake computers hang when trying to command line
ping the other.

2. My /etc/modules.conf contains only alias eth0 3c59x for this adapter; no
io/irq info too.

3. Yes I did mean: ifup ifcfg-eth0

4. Mask for ALL computers on all OSs is 255.255.0.0

Only one packet and a carrier drop...  

Looked at this info and the only difference from my setup is:

My interrupt is 5.  My /etc/modules.conf contains only:

Did you mean:  ifup ifcfg-eth0 ?

As long as both use netmask 255.255.0.0 (aka /16; or shorter mask), this

work once the base problem is solved.
