Dear Larry: Thank you very kindly for a very informative reply. I really appreciate your historical background on Unix and on the problems having to do with a uniform interface. I do like XFCE in spite of its shortcomings (e.g. the icons do not line up properly on the desktop -- some are too larege, others too small). And I do hope that with time it will mature as a desktop. My reasons for switching from KDE was originally simply the insatiable need for more and more memory. XFCE seems to be the answer to that problem. Thanks again.
