Hi Steve and all!
Upgrading kernels is (in my opinion) best made by downloading the sources and
compiling it. The pre-made RPM kernels are very generic and probably contain a lot of
stuff you won't need - possibly slowing things down and/or taking more memory. On the
other hand, compiling a kernel isn't a trivial task if you're new to it. Among other
things you'll have to have a very good knowledge of your system.
There is information included with the sources on how to compile, however it may not
be very intuitive.
If you want to give it a try you could for example check out
http://www.linux.com/howto/Kernel-HOWTO-2.html for more easy-to-follow instructions.
At http://www.kernel.org/ you find the kernel sources. Download the stable release at
the bottom of the page.
Hope you got at least some usful info!
regards
Robert
