For those who don't want to keep coming back to their machine all the
time to say the next command, but who want the building process to
stop at the FIRST error, do this:
make menuconfig && make dep && make clean && make bzImage && make bzlilo
then edit your lilo.conf.. hold on here - edit your lilo.conf FIRST, then
do the above ;-)
Also, I hear that doing 'make oldconfig' is a really good idea if you've
already configured a kernel and want to carry that forward to a new kernel.
Hopefully someone else will pass on the caveats associated with that make
option ;-)
(I usually just do:
make xconfig && make clean && make dep && make install && make modules && make
modules-install
Notice the slightly different order, and the 'install' - but you MUST
change your lilo.conf first. Also notice the make modules - really
important if you're using them! On a 486, this is wonderful, 'cause
I can type that and go to bed ;-)
