Dear Alex and friends:
Have tried different ways to get Linux to detect my USB. Nothing that I
do seems to work.
Here is the data:
1) /etc/modules
[sher@sher07 /etc]$ cat modules
# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time. #
# This file should contain the names of kernel modules that are
# to be loaded at boot time, one per line. Comments begin with # a `#',
and everything on the line after them are ignored.
scsi_hostadapter
usb-interface
[sher@sher07 /etc]$
2) /etc/sysconfig/usb
[sher@sher07 sher]$ cd /etc/sysconfig
[sher@sher07 sysconfig]$ cat usb
USB=yes
MOUSE=no
KEYBOARD=no
STORAGE=yes
VISOR=no
[sher@sher07 sysconfig]$
3) fstab and mtab
[sher@sher07 /etc]$ cat fstab
/dev/hda6 / ext2 defaults 1 1
/dev/hda5 /boot ext2 defaults 1 2
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
/dev/hdb6 /home ext2 defaults 1 2
/mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/cdrom 0 0
/mnt/floppy /mnt/floppy supermount fs=vfat,dev=/dev/fd0 0 0
/mnt/zip /mnt/zip supermount fs=ext2,dev=/dev/sda 0 0
/dev/hdc1 /mnt/windows vfat user,exec,umask=0 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hdb5 swap swap defaults 0 0
[sher@sher07 /etc]$
[sher@sher07 /etc]$ cat mtab
/dev/hda6 / ext2 rw 0 0
none /proc proc rw 0 0
/dev/hda5 /boot ext2 rw 0 0
none /dev/pts devpts rw,mode=0620 0 0
/dev/hdb6 /home ext2 rw 0 0
/mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount rw,fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/cdrom 0 0
/mnt/floppy /mnt/floppy supermount rw,fs=vfat,dev=/dev/fd0 0 0
/mnt/zip /mnt/zip supermount rw,fs=ext2,dev=/dev/sda 0 0
/dev/hdc1 /mnt/windows vfat rw,nosuid,nodev,umask=0 0 0
automount(pid558) /misc autofs rw,fd=8,pgrp=558,minproto=2,maxproto=4 0
0
automount(pid574) /net autofs rw,fd=8,pgrp=574,minproto=2,maxproto=4 0 0
[sher@sher07 /etc]$
[sher@sher07 sher]$ cd /mnt/zip
bash: cd: /mnt/zip: Input/output error
[sher@sher07 sher]$
I tried changing "sda" to "sda4" in the zip line above, but it didn't
make any difference. In fact, in the past, in my case "sda" always
worked (provided configuration was otherwise correct) while sda4 never
worked.
Would really appreciate your help. Can't figure this out. During bootup,
Linux does bring up the line "Detecting USB interface" but fails to
detect it (big red X but no error message).
Thanks so much.
Benjamin
