I come from DOS too and never liked being ruled by a gui, so Emacs
was the logical career (who said 'vi'?).

So you mean something less flexible than Emacs but more powerful than
Word, right? ;-)

You are just following one of the main principles of Linux:
modularization. A combination of small apps combined to fulfil just
the task you are at. That's perfectly ok.
