OK, tell me what the following files have in them:

/etc/sysconfig/network
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-lo
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
/etc/modules.conf

Tell me what type of ethernet card you are using.

I am not promising anything, but it sounds like a 'lo' and 'eth0' config problem.

Also, what does your /var/log/messages file say after doing a network restart?
