Boot to runlevel 1, then type the following:
chkconfig --del smb
This will disable the samba service (server only) from starting. The
client will still function if you need to mount others' samba shares.
You can do one of the following:
init 3 #to go to multiuser text mode
init 5 #to get to a kdm/xdm login prompt
reboot #
