Dear friends:

Internet Sharing -- Almost there!

Thanks to a tip from someone on the Mandrake list, I realized that you can't
set up Internet Sharing graphically using BOTH Linxuconf AND the new Wizards
in the Mandrake Control Center. That's what was causing all the trouble these
past few days.

Apparently, there is no automatic configuration for Internet Sharing in
Linuxconf in LM 8.0. So, I decided to do everything in the Mandrake Control
Center, i.e. I wiped out all the configuration records from Linuxconf,
unchecked "Enable" for both eth0 and eth1, just kept my host name and domain
(required), rebooted and started from scratch in the Mandrake Control Center.
There are two sections in the Control Center under Networking and only two
Connection and Internet Sharing. I selected Connection. Here there are three
subsections (if you switch to Expert: a) Configure (to configure your
Internet connection), LAN, and Connect. I selected Configure, then DSL
(even though the Wizard selected LAN since I had two ethernet cards. I had
tried that earlier and it didn't work. Internet Connection has to be
configured first). I then selected eth0 as the card for my ADSL, selected
pppoe, etc. Everything configured perfectly. I then went into the LAN section
and found that my eth0 and eth1 were already configured perfectly. I then
clicked on "Connect" and was immediately connected to the Net. Tested with
Netscape and RealPlayer. Then rebooted to test if the settings stuck. The
settings have not changed and are the same I used earlier in my first
installation of Internet Sharing after first installing LM 8.0:

eth0
10.0.0.10
255.255.255.0
eth0
3c59x

eth1
192.168.0.1
255.255.255.0
eth1
tulip

I now went into the second section of Networking, namely, Internet Sharing. I
did this successfully right after installing LM 8.0 the first time around.
The installation took two minutes with instant Internet Sharing in my Toshiba.

I think that I all I need now is to figure out what's holding things up. I am
sure it has to do with some left-over code from my previous attempts to
configure Networking in both Linuxconf and in the Mandrake Control Center.
When I try to open Internet Sharing, I get the following message:

"Config file content could not be interpreted" ???

What does this mean, please?

At this point, I was asked to install certain files from my CD: dhcpd,
iftables, ifchains, etc. But this error message is making it impossible for
me to proceed to this stage of installation and configuration.

What are they talking about, please, and how can I resolve this issue. I am
sure once I get past this first stage, the rest should be a breeze and I
should have Internet Sharing instantly. Just like last time.

Thanks so very much.

Benjamin
