Dear friends:

First, my thanks again to all of you who took out time from their busy
schedules to respond to my Word97/Wine query.

I added all of my Windows True Type fonts to Linux. You do that automatically
in LM 8.0 (available since LM 7.1 or 7.2) in K, Configuration, Other,
Drakfont. Just select all of your Windows fonts, click OK and, bingo, they
are now part of LM 8.0.

I decided to repeat this process (guessing correctly that I had to do this
again AFTER installing Wine and I was right!). I went back to MSWord right
afterwards and saw no font error messages (the infamous trebuchet font
message) during launch this time and found all of my TT fonts there, every
one of them, even the Cyrillic fonts (I am a Russian translator). Amazing.

I did not see any icon issues. Remember that I chose all native dlls, where
possible and for Window mode: Desktop = 1024 x 768. The perfect choice, I
think. MS Word appeared in half-size. I then expanded it and because of the
desktop size, it looked for all the world just like the real thing.

Well, I did a little more research at Wine headquarters
(http://www.winehq.org) under Search: Word97, etc. I found from the
correspondence that no one has succeeded in getting Word97 to work in
anything even close to a satisfactory way. I was lucky to be able to use my
mouse and keyboard and even print preview but no printing, no saving, and no
other menu entries were really accessible except the one that was put there
by Wine itself. So, perhaps the man (Jim) from codeweavers-wine tech support
was right after all.

So, unless Wine makes dramatic progress or someone has the magic key, I think
I'll just consider this an interesting experiment. Let's hope Codeweavers or
Wine itself succeed in making it work in time for Wine 1.0 or whenever. Until
such time, I bid this project my fond adieu.

All my thanks again for your kind help.

Benjamin
