Hi Benjamin,
     Sounds as if you made a valiant effort.  Thanks for sharing your experiences with 
us.
It seems to me that any adjustments that might need to be made in SO when opening a 
Word .doc (I very rarely need to make any), would require less
effort than fighting w/ Wine at this point.
Abiword works fairly well w/ rather simple .doc documents,
but is much less effective w/ anything complex (columns, tables, etc.)
