I installed version 8 on my system and 2 strange things are happening.

The first is that during the install, when fetching the various files it
would load 3 or 4 rapidly, and then on the next would get part way
through the fetch and stop. After 15 to 30 seconds, it would start again
and continue on. If the file being loaded was large, this stalling would
happen maybe 2 or 3 times within the fetch. The install took about 3
hours what with the starting and stopping.

I just installed another program from the CD using the software manager,
and it did the same thing - that is halting for about 20 or 30 seconds
in the middle of the fetch and then continuing on.

My machine uses SCSI drives with the linux drive being ID 1. The CD-ROM
is ID 4. A currently unused drive is ID 0. Could the position in the
chain have any effect? The drive is a Western Digital 9 GB ultra SCSI.
The CD-ROM is Fast/Narrow. The SCSI adapter is an ADAPTEC 2940.

Secondly, when the machine boots up, everything looks good at the logon
prompt. Then a bunch of messages appear on the screen. The first group
of about 15 in total states:

"modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-4".

The second bunch state:

"modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-180".

As I said - verrry strange.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Tnx... Tom.
