I have the 2.4.3-20mdk kernel, installed by LM8.0, and a CMI8330 isa pnp
sound chip on the motherboard (not a separate card.
I have been trying to get sound working using ALSA, but have failed.
Someone has advised me elsewhere that the reason it is not working is that
I have a modified kernel, with which ALSA will not work, and that I should
compile a new kernel from "standard" sources.
Is he correct?
What modifications are made by Mandrake, and what would be the effect on
system functionality of replacing the Mandrake kernel with a standard one?

Thanks,
Bob
