i have the same card as yours ESS on my desktop. maybe
you can check what sound modules are loaded (lsmod).
you can rmmod the sblive modules and insmod the ess
modules. after deleting the SBlive modules you can
sndconfig and see if the system knows about your ess
sound card. snd config will load the modules for you.
