I am trying to run a downloaded copy of the latest iptables rpm on Mandrake 8.0.
but it fails.
The rpm I have installed is iptables-1.2.2-4mdk.i586.rpm.

The reason I downloaded and installed an updated iptables
is the iptables that came with Mandrake 8.0 simply didn't run
because the script called for invalid options.

When in init.d as root I try to invoke iptables with the command
./iptables start
I get the following error messages:

iptables v1.2.2: can't initialize iptables table 'filter': Module is wrong version
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.

Applying iptables firewall rules:
Bad argument '/usr/bin/killall'
Try iptables-restore -h or iptables-restore --help for more information.

The file /usr/bin/killall exists.
Iptables-restore --help is very terse and unhelpful.

I don't know what the iptables tables 'filter" is.
Does this mean the rules I downloaded?
If so where can I find a good starter set?

When I tried /sbin/iptables-restore -c the program just hangs until ctl-c.

I'm using the stock kernel that came with Mandrake 8.0.
Do I need a new kernel or something else?

I'm trying various things and reading the fine manuals up a storm
but I'm really stuck and need some help.

Thanks, Larry Alkoff N2LA
